Marquette Golf Club Greywalls

Few courses in the Midwest earn the kind of reverent, almost disbelieving word-of-mouth that Greywalls has accumulated since it opened in 2005. Designed by Mike DeVries, the course was carved into a rugged stretch of Upper Peninsula terrain unlike anything most golfers encounter outside of Scotland — fractured granite outcroppings, native fescue, dense boreal forest, and severe elevation changes that make the routing feel simultaneously wild and inevitable. DeVries worked with the land rather than against it, and the result is a course that looks like it could have been discovered rather than built.

The Upper Peninsula's short golf season and remote location have only deepened Greywalls' cult status. Marquette sits on the south shore of Lake Superior, and the cool, unpredictable climate keeps the fescue firm and fast and gives the course a links-adjacent feel even though it's landlocked in the north woods.

Greywalls plays as a private club, and access has historically required a member connection — which makes finally getting out there feel genuinely earned.
