Morelia sits at roughly 6,200 feet in the highlands of Michoacán, a colonial city of pink stone and baroque cathedrals that regularly lands on lists of Mexico's most beautiful urban centers. Golf at this elevation plays a touch longer off the tee than the yardage markers suggest — the thinner air gives the ball genuine carry — and the surrounding landscape of pine-forested hills and temperate mountain climate makes for conditions unlike the beach-resort courses that most visiting golfers associate with Mexican golf.
El Reto ("The Challenge") carries a name that sets expectations plainly. As a private or semi-private facility in a city not primarily known as a golf destination, it serves a local membership drawn from one of central Mexico's most culturally rich communities, the kind of course where the game is woven into the rhythms of the city rather than packaged for tourists.
Beyond the name and the setting, specific details about El Reto's design lineage, signature holes, and history aren't something I can speak to with confidence. What's certain is that playing golf in Michoacán's highlands offers a genuinely different Mexican experience — mountainous, unhurried, and a long way from the coasts.
