Venterspost is a ghost of the Witwatersrand's mining era, a course that grew up alongside the gold-reef communities that once made this stretch of Gauteng among the most economically vital land on earth. Venterspost itself was a company town — the kind of place built around a shaft and a headgear, where the mine management laid out a golf course as much for social order as for sport. Courses like this were common across the West Rand in the mid-20th century, each one a small green world carved out beside the yellow mine dumps that defined the landscape.

The West Rand's mining belt produced dozens of such courses, and most have shared Venterspost's fate.
