Rushmere Golf Club sits on Rushmere Heath on the northeastern edge of Ipswich, one of Suffolk's oldest and most characterful stretches of common land. The heath has been a golfing ground since the late 19th century, and the club carries that long history in its bones — a traditional heathland layout where gorse, bracken, and sandy subsoil shape the experience as much as the architecture does. Heathland turf drains fast and plays firm, rewarding ground-game thinking over the purely aerial approach.
At par 70, the course demands accuracy rather than length, and the open, windswept nature of the heath means that a breezy Suffolk day can turn a comfortable round into something considerably more serious. The shorter par 4s and pair of par 5s ask for placement off the tee, while the heath's natural contours create awkward stances and deceptive run-outs.
Ipswich itself is a market town with a genuine grassroots golf culture, and Rushmere occupies an important place within it — a members' club with a strong local identity and a course that rewards those who take the time to learn its rhythms.
