Few resort courses in the Caribbean can claim both the scale and the architectural pedigree of Cana Bay. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 2014, it stretches along a dramatic stretch of the Dominican Republic's eastern coastline, where the Atlantic gives the layout a genuine sense of exposure rare for a resort destination. Jones, whose reputation was built reshaping major-championship venues in the United States, brought that same attention to strategic precision here — Cana Bay is a serious test that rewards considered shot-making rather than simply punishing the wayward ball.
The course occupies the grounds of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino complex in Punta Cana, but its character reaches well beyond the resort bubble. Several holes play directly beside the ocean, and the constant Atlantic breeze means club selection is rarely straightforward, even for accomplished players. The conditioning is maintained to a high standard year-round, a point of pride in a region where the tropical climate can test a superintendent's patience.
La Altagracia province is the beating heart of Dominican golf tourism, home to a concentration of internationally recognized layouts that has made Punta Cana one of the more compelling golf destinations in the wider Caribbean. Cana Bay sits confidently among that company.
