Jack Nicklaus brought his design stamp to the Sierra Nevada with Old Greenwood, a signature course that opened in 2004 as part of the Tahoe Mountain Resorts portfolio. Built through a high-elevation forest of lodgepole pines and granite outcroppings, the layout reflects Nicklaus's characteristic blend of strategic demand and scenic drama — wide corridors that invite aggressive play off the tee, then tighten around greens that reward precision. The course sits at roughly 6,000 feet, which means the thin air adds distance to your shots but the afternoon thunderstorms of a Sierra summer can change everything quickly.
Truckee itself is a mountain town with genuine character — historic downtown, a strong year-round outdoor culture, and proximity to Lake Tahoe's north shore. Golf here is a warm-weather window, roughly May through October, and Old Greenwood has served as a PGA Tour Champions venue, hosting the Charles Schwab Cup Championship series in the mid-2000s.
This is resort golf done with ambition rather than gimmickry. The mountain setting does the scenery work, and the Nicklaus design does the rest — a course that plays differently at elevation and asks real questions throughout all 18 holes.
