Southeast Idaho doesn't get much golf press, but the Bear River Valley has its own quiet appeal — rolling agricultural land tucked between the Wasatch Range to the east and the dry ridgelines of the Caribou-Targhee country to the west. Preston Country Club lives in that world, a private members' club rooted in a small city better known for its high-school football legacy than its fairways.
At 6,269 yards from the tips, this is not a course asking you to overpower it. Par 71 and a course rating of 68.7 suggest that scoring opportunities are real — but a slope of 122 keeps things honest, which means the layout rewards smart positioning and clean ball-striking over raw distance. The gaps between a good round and a sloppy one are probably tighter than the numbers first imply.
The setting does real work here. Idaho's high valley climate means dramatic spring greening, crisp fall afternoons with the Franklin Basin ridges flushing amber above the treeline, and summer rounds played under the wide, unhurried skies that define this corner of the intermountain West.
For Preston members, this is community golf in the truest sense — a place where the same families have walked the same fairways across generations, which carries a kind of weight that no ranking or renovation can manufacture.
