Sishen Golf Club

Sishen Golf Club takes its name from the Sishen iron ore mine — one of the largest open-cast iron ore mines in the world — that effectively built the town of Kathu around it. The course exists because of Kumba Iron Ore (formerly Iscor), which developed employee facilities in this remote corner of the Northern Cape to attract and retain workers in an otherwise isolated industrial community. That origin story shapes everything about the place: this is a company-supported club with a genuine membership culture, not a resort showpiece, and it carries the unpretentious, serious-about-golf character you tend to find in courses that exist to serve a real community rather than impress passing visitors.

Kathu itself sits in the Kalahari, and the landscape around the course is defined by the region's extraordinary camel thorn woodland — the Kathu Forest is a protected national monument, with some of the densest concentrations of ancient camel thorn trees in southern Africa. Those trees are the course's defining visual feature and its most persistent strategic hazard.

The Northern Cape climate means heat, low humidity, and firm, fast conditions through much of the year, with the thin Highveld-adjacent air adding distance to every shot. Golfers visiting from the coast routinely underclub.
