Orange sits at the far southeastern corner of Texas, where the Sabine River marks the Louisiana border and the landscape flattens into a humid coastal plain thick with pine and hardwood. The region has long been defined by its petrochemical industry, and the Dupont facility here was for decades one of the major employers anchoring the local economy. Employee recreation associations attached to large industrial plants were a genuine feature of mid-20th century American corporate culture — companies built bowling alleys, softball diamonds, and golf courses as amenities for their workforce, and the courses that resulted were often surprisingly well-maintained and warmly communal in character.
