Kermit sits deep in the Permian Basin, about as far west as Texas gets before the land tips into New Mexico, and the golf out here reflects that frontier sensibility — straightforward, unpretentious, and built for people who actually live and work in this part of the world. Winkler County Golf Course is the community's course in the truest sense, a municipal layout that serves ranch hands, oil field workers, and local families rather than resort visitors or tournament circuits.
West Texas doesn't offer the lush parkland conditions you'd find in wetter parts of the state. Expect firm, sun-baked turf, wide-open sightlines, and the kind of relentless wind that can turn a manageable hole into a genuine puzzle. The flat Chihuahuan Desert terrain means elevation change is minimal, but reading the wind becomes its own skill set out here.
At par 71, the course plays slightly short of a regulation par-72 layout, suggesting at least a couple of shorter par-4s that reward precision over power. For anyone passing through on US-302 or visiting the Permian Basin, this is honest, no-frills West Texas golf.
