Poult Wood has been a fixture of the Kent public golf scene since the early 1970s, operated by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and offering one of the more accessible rounds in the Weald of Kent. The course occupies gently rolling woodland on the greensand ridge south of Tonbridge, and the mature trees — predominantly oak and silver birch — give it a character that belies its municipal status. At par 68 it leans heavily on par 3s and short par 4s, which makes it a natural fit for beginners and high-handicappers, though the tight, tree-lined corridors demand more accuracy than the modest length implies.
The setting is quietly attractive. Tonbridge itself sits on the River Medway, historically a market town on the road between London and the coast, and the surrounding countryside has a soft, pastoral quality typical of the Kent Weald.
For locals this is the kind of club that quietly sustains a community's relationship with the game — a place where people learn, return regularly, and bring their children. It rewards straight hitting rather than power, and a good round here is built on patience rather than length.
