Few private clubs in Southern California carry the mystique of Pauma Valley Country Club. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1960, carved into the foothills of the Palomar Mountain range in northern San Diego County — terrain that gives the layout an intimacy and verticality rarely found in the region's more typical coastal or desert settings. Jones shaped the land with his characteristic blend of strategic bunkering and bold green complexes, and the mature oak trees and avocado groves that frame many holes have only deepened the course's character over the decades.
The valley itself sits at a comfortable inland elevation, which means cooler summers than San Diego proper and a quiet, almost rural atmosphere — a deliberate remove from the bustle of the coast. The club has long been considered one of California's premier private retreats, earning consistent recognition among the state's top courses.
Playing Pauma Valley feels like a privilege in the truest sense. The membership is small and protective of the club's low-key exclusivity, which means the course is rarely crowded and the conditions are consistently exceptional.
