Monticello sits at roughly 7,000 feet on the edge of Utah's canyon country, where the Abajo Mountains rise to the west and the redrock mesas of the Colorado Plateau stretch toward the horizon. At that elevation, the air is thin, the sky is enormous, and a golf ball carries noticeably farther than it would at sea level — a small but satisfying bonus for anyone making the drive out here through one of the American West's most dramatic landscapes.
The Hideout GC is a municipal-style course serving a small, tight-knit community in San Juan County, one of the more remote corners of the state. Courses like this one are the backbone of everyday golf in rural Utah — unpretentious, affordable, and genuinely appreciated by locals who don't have to travel far for a round on real grass surrounded by real scenery.
What a place like Monticello offers that no private enclave can manufacture is authenticity. The views toward Bears Ears and the canyon country to the south are the kind that stop you mid-backswing, and that's a feature no scorecard has ever figured out how to capture.
