Tom Fazio designed Olde Sycamore, which opened in 2001 in the fast-growing Mint Hill area southeast of Charlotte. Fazio routed the course through mature hardwoods and rolling Piedmont terrain, giving it a wooded, private feel that stands apart from the more manicured resort-style layouts common to the region. The course earned consistent praise after opening and quickly built a reputation as one of the stronger public-access layouts in the greater Charlotte market.
The Piedmont Carolinas landscape does most of the heavy lifting here — elevation changes, tight treelines, and the kind of red clay soil that shapes both the conditioning and the ground game. Fazio's design rewards players who manage their tee shots carefully; the corridors through the hardwoods leave little margin for error, and the routing makes strong use of the natural contours rather than imposing artificial drama.
Charlotte has grown into a serious golf city, with a range of courses spanning daily-fee tracks to private clubs, and Olde Sycamore holds its own in that company. For golfers visiting the area or locals looking for a course with genuine design pedigree and a sense of place, it remains a dependable and worthwhile stop.
