Cle Elum sits at the eastern gateway to the Cascade Mountains, where the wetter, forested slopes of the west give way to the drier, open terrain of the Columbia Plateau. It's a transition zone with real character — ponderosa pines, sage-scented air, and wide views that remind you you've crossed into a different Washington than the one most visitors know. The Yakima River valley threads through this country, and the landscape carries the unhurried feel of a working ranch town that's gradually become a destination for outdoor recreation.
The name Rope Rider evokes the ranching and rodeo heritage that runs deep through Kittitas County, and the course fits into that larger story of the region reimagining itself around tourism without abandoning its identity. Golf in this corner of the state tends to benefit from more sunshine and drier conditions than the Puget Sound side of the mountains, which translates to firm, fast turf through much of the season.
