Few settings in the Atlantic world match Winding Bay's particular drama — a crescent of turquoise water cutting into the limestone spine of Great Abaco Island, where the land narrows to near-nothing between ocean and sound. The Abaco Club occupies that sliver of geography with full awareness of its luck, and the golf course — designed by Donald Steel and later refined by Tom Mackenzie — plays directly into the theatre of it, routing holes along clifftops, through native coppice, and down toward the shoreline with a naturalness that feels discovered rather than designed.
The club itself carries the character of a serious sporting retreat — the kind of place built around fishing, sailing, and golf in roughly equal measure, with a membership that tends to know the difference between a course that looks good in photographs and one that actually rewards thoughtful play. The routing rewards both, which is rare.
Abaco sits north of Nassau in the Bahamas' least-touristed major island chain, which suits the course's personality. The wind off the Atlantic is a constant variable, turning mid-length holes into genuine tests and reminding you that par here is earned against more than just the yardage.
