Few private clubs in the American South command the kind of quiet reverence that Cullasaja Club does. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1988, it sits high in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Highlands, North Carolina — one of the most distinctive golf environments in the eastern United States. At roughly 4,200 feet of elevation, the air is cool even in midsummer, the fairways roll through mature hardwood forest, and the mountain terrain demands shot-making that flat-country golf simply cannot prepare you for.
Cullasaja has long been regarded as one of Fazio's finest mountain designs, consistently appearing on national rankings of America's best private courses. The routing uses the natural topography rather than fighting it, producing dramatic elevation changes, forced carries over ravines, and views that periodically pull your attention away from the task at hand. It plays firm and fast by mountain standards, and local knowledge matters enormously.
Highlands itself is a small, affluent resort town on the North Carolina–Georgia border, long favored by lowland Southerners seeking summer relief. The surrounding Nantahala National Forest sets the tone — remote, forested, and unhurried.
