Golfbaan Hitland occupies a stretch of polder landscape in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, a small municipality tucked into the heart of the Zuidplas region — the lowest-lying area in the Netherlands and, in fact, one of the lowest points in all of Europe. Playing here means playing below sea level, on land reclaimed from water over centuries of Dutch hydraulic engineering. The flat terrain is characteristic of South Holland's interior, with wide skies, open sightlines, and the occasional drainage ditch cutting across or alongside the layout. Wind is a constant companion and genuinely shapes how the course plays on any given day.
Hitland sits within a broader recreational area of the same name, a green oasis developed on the fringes of the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan corridor. The surrounding parkland setting gives the course a more sheltered feel than purely open polderland, with some tree planting adding definition to the holes.
For golfers in the region, Hitland represents an accessible, well-rooted club in an area with a surprisingly rich recreational tradition given its urban surroundings. It offers a genuine sense of Dutch landscape golf — modest in drama, but honest and quietly engaging.
