Few clubs on Long Island carry a name with such deliberate wit — "Southward Ho" is a play on Southampton, the storied Hamptons enclave, filtered through the nautical vernacular of Great South Bay. The club has deep roots in the early 20th-century golf boom that transformed the South Shore of Long Island into one of the most club-dense stretches in American golf. The course itself was designed by Devereux Emmet, the prolific New York architect responsible for several classic layouts across the Northeast, and it retains the quiet, strategic character typical of that era — routing that rewards placement and thought over raw distance.
Bay Shore sits along the bay's northern edge, with Fire Island and the Atlantic barrier beach visible to the south on a clear day. The landscape is flat and open in the way the South Shore tends to be, with mature trees defining the holes and the salt-tinged air a constant presence. It is private club golf in a genuinely historic setting.
The par-71 layout is slightly unusual in form, which gives Southward Ho a personality distinct from the more symmetrical designs common in the region. Members play a course that has aged with some grace, holding onto its original character in an era when many of its neighbors have been rerouted or modernized beyond recognition.
