Few courses capture the quiet agricultural soul of the Shropshire countryside quite like Arscott. Established in the early 1990s on farmland southwest of Shrewsbury, the course was laid out by Bob Sandow across gently rolling pasture, and it has matured steadily into one of the county's more characterful members' clubs. The layout plays to a par 70, leaning on a pair of par 5s and a strong collection of two-shotters to generate its test, and the prevailing westerly winds that sweep across this open ground can turn an approachable card into something considerably more demanding.
Shrewsbury itself is one of England's finest medieval market towns, almost entirely encircled by a loop of the River Severn, and the sense of deep, unhurried English tradition carries right out to the course. The Shropshire hills form a backdrop to the west, with the outline of the Long Mynd visible on clear days.
Arscott draws a loyal local membership and has the feel of a club where the golf is taken seriously without the atmosphere becoming stiff. It rewards course knowledge and straight hitting over raw power, making it the kind of place that improves on repeat visits.
