Few courses in England carry the weight of history that Formby does. Founded in 1884, this Lancashire links is one of the genuine classics of British golf — a course that has shaped the game's traditions while remaining quietly confident in its own identity. The club has hosted numerous significant amateur championships, and its roll of honour reflects generations of serious competitive golf. Peter Alliss and others have long counted it among England's finest.
Formby sits within the famous stretch of linksland running up the Lancashire coast, a few miles south of Southport and north of Liverpool. The terrain is quintessential — tumbling sandhills, fescue rough that punishes the wayward, and a pine-lined layout that gives it a slightly more sheltered feel than some of its exposed neighbours, without sacrificing any of the links challenge. The turf is firm and fast, the wind a constant variable.
This is a members' club that wears its prestige without theatrics. Visitors are welcomed but will sense immediately that the golf is taken seriously here — as it has been for well over a century.
