Few golf settings in California can match the sheer drama of playing beneath a 14,000-foot active volcano. Mount Shasta Resort's course sits at the base of its namesake peak in the far north of the state, where the mountain dominates the skyline on clear days and gives the round a sense of scale that flatland courses simply can't manufacture. The Shasta-Trinity region is high-country California — ponderosa pines, cold streams, and air that feels genuinely different from the congested corridors to the south.
The layout plays as a par 70, which signals a course that rewards accuracy and course management over raw power. The terrain through this part of the Cascades tends to roll and pitch in ways that create natural variety, and the tree-lined corridors typical of mountain resort designs keep errant shots honest.
As a resort property, the course serves as a centerpiece amenity for visitors drawn to the area for fishing, hiking, and the mountain itself. For many guests, a round here is as much about the backdrop as the scorecard.
