Prachuap Khiri Khan is one of Thailand's most scenically dramatic coastal provinces — a narrow strip of land squeezed between the Gulf of Thailand and the Tenasserim Hills, where the country pinches to just 12 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. The town itself is a quiet, unhurried fishing community largely bypassed by the resort crowds heading to Hua Hin to the north or Chumphon to the south, which gives the whole area an authentically local character that's increasingly rare on the Gulf coast.
Wing 5 Golf Club is a military course operated by Royal Thai Air Force Wing 5, the air base that sits at the edge of town — a setup common throughout Thailand, where armed forces facilities frequently open their golf courses to civilian and visiting players at accessible green fees. The course plays against a backdrop that's hard to match: karst limestone peaks rise abruptly from the flat coastal plain, and the bay curves around the town in a near-perfect arc visible from much of the layout.
Courses like this one tend to reward players who enjoy golf as an experience rather than a test — open to the elements off the Gulf, generous in atmosphere, and staffed with the warmth Thai hospitality is known for. Early morning rounds here, before the coastal heat builds, offer some of the most pleasant golf in the region.
