Few American golf clubs carry as much competitive history as Cherry Hills. The course opened in 1923, designed by William Flynn, whose portfolio also includes Shinnecock Hills and The Country Club at Brookline. Flynn carved a layout through the high plains terrain south of Denver that has tested the game's best for a century — most memorably in the 1960 U.S. Open, when Arnold Palmer drove the first green in the final round, shot 65, and charged past a young Jack Nicklaus and veteran Ben Hogan to claim the title. That moment remains one of the most celebrated in major championship history.
Cherry Hills has hosted the U.S. Open 3 times, along with multiple PGA Championships, U.S. Amateur, and Women's Open titles, making it one of the most decorated tournament venues in the country. The layout rewards precision over power, with tree-lined fairways and the South Platte River weaving into play on several holes.
Sitting at roughly 5,300 feet elevation in Cherry Hills Village — one of Colorado's most affluent communities — the course plays with the added dimension of altitude. Balls carry farther than at sea level, the air is dry and often brilliant, and the Front Range of the Rockies frames the skyline throughout the round.
