Benton Hall has been a fixture of the Essex golf scene since the early 1990s, carved from the gently undulating farmland that characterises this part of the county between Chelmsford and Colchester. The course occupies mature parkland grounds on the outskirts of Witham, and over the decades it has developed into one of the more respected members' clubs in mid-Essex — well-maintained, with a layout that rewards accuracy over raw distance and punishes wayward play with tree-lined corridors and strategically placed water features.
Witham itself sits in the Blackwater valley, a quiet market town with good rail connections to London Liverpool Street, which has historically made clubs in this corridor popular with commuter-belt golfers looking for something a cut above the typical municipal. The surrounding Essex countryside is flatter than its reputation suggests, but Benton Hall draws enough natural contour from its parkland setting to keep the routing interesting throughout.
At par 71, the course plays slightly shorter than a traditional championship test, but the layout is considered rather than simply compact. Members tend to speak fondly of its conditioning and the genuine variety in how each nine plays out.
