Kuusamo Golf's Petäjäkankaan course sits in one of Finland's most dramatic natural settings — the subarctic wilderness around Kuusamo, where the landscape shifts between vast pine forests, glacially carved lakes, and the rugged fell terrain that defines this corner of Lapland's doorstep. The course takes its name from the sandy, pine-heath ground ("petäjäkangas" means pine heath) that characterizes the terrain underfoot, giving the layout a distinctive northern feel unlike anything you'd encounter at a southern Finnish parkland course.
Golf this far north comes with conditions that demand respect. Summer rounds here are played under the midnight sun, with long evening light stretching rounds into an almost surreal experience. The short season concentrates play into a few intense months, and the natural surroundings — reindeer country, brown bear habitat, the Oulanka National Park just down the road — are never far from mind when you're standing on the tee.
Kuusamo itself is best known internationally as a winter destination and biathlon/Nordic skiing hub, which means the golf course draws a crowd that genuinely loves the outdoors rather than simply looking for a round between meetings. That spirit tends to attract engaged, unpretentious golfers, and the course reflects that ethos: golf rooted in real Nordic landscape rather than manicured artifice.
