Palm Desert sits in the heart of the Coachella Valley, where the Santa Rosa Mountains rise sharply from the desert floor and the winter golf season draws players from across the country escaping colder climates. The valley has developed one of the densest concentrations of private clubs in California, ranging from storied championship layouts to intimate residential retreats, and The Lakes Country Club belongs firmly to that second tradition — a members' community where the course is woven into daily life rather than showcasing itself to the outside world.
As a private residential club, The Lakes is built around the rhythms of its membership: morning rounds before the desert heat peaks, familiar faces in the grillroom, and a course maintained to reward the players who know every bounce and break. That intimacy tends to produce a layout where local knowledge matters as much as raw ball-striking.
The Coachella Valley's near-constant sunshine and low humidity make for firm, fast conditions most of the year, with peak season running roughly October through April when the desert is at its most inviting.
