Few public courses in the Great Plains carry the pedigree of Colbert Hills. Designed by Jim Colbert — the Kansas State University alum and PGA Tour veteran — in partnership with Jeff Brauer, the course opened in 2000 as a tribute to Colbert's roots in the Flint Hills region. It sits on the Kansas State campus and serves as a flagship facility for the university's golf program, giving it a rare dual identity: serious tournament venue and accessible public layout.
The design embraces the wide-open character of the tallgrass prairie, where wind is not a peripheral factor but a governing one. Exposed fairways, firm conditions, and relentless Kansas breezes mean that club selection and ball flight matter far more than raw distance. The course has earned consistent recognition among the top public courses in Kansas and draws players from across the region who want a genuine test rather than a polished resort distraction.
Manhattan itself sits at the edge of the Flint Hills, one of the last remaining stretches of native tallgrass prairie in North America — a landscape that gives the course its visual identity and its teeth.
