Few private clubs in the Pacific Northwest carry the institutional weight of Waverley Country Club. Founded in 1896, it ranks among the oldest golf clubs in Oregon, and its grounds along the Willamette River in southeast Portland reflect more than a century of accumulated character. A.V. Macan, the Scottish-born architect responsible for several of the region's most respected layouts, shaped the course in the early 20th century, and his routing has endured largely in spirit — measured, strategic, and rooted in the natural contours of the land rather than imposed upon them.
The setting along the Willamette gives Waverley a quality that is genuinely rare in an urban private club: a sense of remove, of a course that occupies its ground with quiet authority. Mature trees frame fairways throughout, and the riverside terrain introduces subtle elevation changes that reward thoughtful play over raw power.
Waverley has hosted significant amateur and regional competitions over the decades and maintains a serious golf culture among its membership. This is a place that takes the game's history seriously — a club that feels earned rather than purchased.
