Few private clubs in the American South carry the kind of quiet prestige that Ford Field & River Club does. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1995, the course winds through a Low Country landscape of salt marshes, tidal creeks, and ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss — terrain that defines coastal Georgia as distinctly as anywhere on earth. Jones shaped the routing to move with the land rather than against it, and the result is a course that feels inevitable, as if it had always been there among the marshgrass and tidal water.
Richmond Hill sits about 20 miles south of Savannah, in Bryan County, and the surrounding landscape carries its own deep history — the area served as Henry Ford's winter retreat in the early 20th century, which lends the club's name a genuine local resonance. The marshes and waterways that characterize this stretch of Georgia coast come into play throughout the round, rewarding patience and precision over power.
Ford Field is strictly private, and access is limited to members and their guests, which has helped preserve its understated character. It occupies a place in Low Country golf that is more word-of-mouth than ranked-list — the kind of club people who know, know.
