Alamos Golf Course

Few stretches of the Algarve coastline pack as much golfing ambition into a single destination as the Pestana Golf Resort complex outside Portimão, and Alamos is a meaningful part of that story. Designed by the prolific Portuguese-British partnership of Peter Alliss and Clive Clark and opened in the early 1990s, the course leans into the undulating inland terrain of the western Algarve, offering a notably different character from the clifftop drama of Penina or the oceanfront layouts further east. Rolling cork oak woodland frames many of the holes, giving the round an enclosed, almost intimate quality that rewards shot-shaping over raw power.

Portimão itself is one of the Algarve's most lived-in towns — a working port and commercial hub rather than a pure tourist resort — which gives the surrounding golf a grounded, year-round feel. The climate is reliably mild from October through May, when the fairways play firm and fast.

As part of the Pestana complex, Alamos shares facilities with the adjacent Gramacho course, and guests typically access both. The routing suits mid-handicappers well while offering enough strategic variation to keep stronger players honest.
