Few public golf courses in America carry the historical weight of Chester L. Washington. Opened in 1928 and built specifically to serve Black golfers who were barred from Los Angeles's segregated courses, it became a vital hub of African American golf culture during the Jim Crow era — a place where community, competition, and dignity converged on the same fairways. The course is named for Chester L. Washington, the influential sportswriter for the Los Angeles Sentinel who championed the course and the broader cause of equal access to the game.
Located in South Los Angeles's Rollin Hills Park area, the layout sits among the gentle topography characteristic of the LA basin, with the mild Southern California climate making it a genuinely year-round operation. It has long served as an accessible entry point into the game for the surrounding community.
Today "Chesty Wash," as locals know it, remains a public facility operated by LA County, continuing its original mission as a welcoming, community-rooted course with a story that the scorecard alone could never tell.
