Royal Calcutta Golf Club

Few golf clubs anywhere can claim a founding date of 1829, but Royal Calcutta can — making it the oldest golf club outside the British Isles and the oldest in Asia by a distance measured in generations. Established by British colonials in what was then the imperial capital of India, the club received its "Royal" designation from King George V in 1911, a title it wears with the quiet confidence of an institution that has simply outlasted most of the world's golfing history.

The course itself sits in Tollygunge, a leafy southern neighborhood of Kolkata, and plays through mature woodland that gives the layout a shaded, almost parkland serenity unusual for a city of this size and intensity. The design rewards precise iron play and course management over raw power, and the classic, unhurried character of the layout has changed relatively little through the decades — intentionally so.

Royal Calcutta has hosted Indian Open championships and remains the heartbeat of competitive golf in a country where the game is growing rapidly. Playing here carries a weight that no scorecard statistic can convey.
