Few inland courses on the Côte d'Azur can match the setting that Golf de la Grande Bastide commands. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson and opened in 1990, the course winds through the Provençal backcountry above Grasse — the perfume capital of the world — in a landscape of olive trees, stone walls, and wild scrub that feels worlds away from the bustle of the coast below. Robinson, an American architect who built much of his career in Europe, shaped the terrain with a thoughtful hand, using the natural contours of the hillside rather than fighting them.
The course plays through a valley setting that rewards shot-shaping and course management over raw power. Elevation changes are a constant factor, and the views across the Alpes-Maritimes add a distraction that is entirely forgivable. The combination of firm turf, Mediterranean sun, and fragrant garrigue gives rounds here a sensory texture that is distinctly southern French.
Opio sits roughly 20 kilometres from Nice and within easy reach of Cannes and Antibes, making La Grande Bastide a natural choice for visitors exploring the Riviera who want serious golf without venturing far from the coast's amenities.
