Few destinations in American golf offer a backdrop quite like this one. Towa Golf Resort sits on the lands of Pueblo de Tesuque, a sovereign Native American community just north of Santa Fe, and the course draws its name — and its identity — from the Tewa word for "ball game." Designed by Hale Irwin and William Phillips and opened in 1999, it plays across high desert terrain at roughly 7,000 feet of elevation, where the ball flies farther than expected and the landscape does most of the talking.
The resort offers 2 distinct 9-hole loops — the Valley and Boulder nines — that can be combined into an 18-hole round. The Boulder nine is the more dramatic of the two, threading through arroyos and rock formations with views that sweep toward the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Valley nine opens things up across broader, more forgiving terrain before the elevation and thin air begin making their presence felt.
Santa Fe itself is one of the American Southwest's most distinctive cities — a place of genuine cultural depth, adobe architecture, and serious food. Towa fits that spirit well: it isn't a manufactured resort experience grafted onto the landscape, but a course that feels like it actually belongs here.
