The San Gabriel Mountains make their presence known from practically every tee at Eaton Canyon — that dramatic north wall of the greater Los Angeles basin rising abruptly from the suburban flatlands, close enough to feel like it's leaning over your shoulder. This is a city-owned course, Pasadena's everyday golf, and it wears that identity honestly.
At 5,732 yards from the tips and playing to a par of 70, Eaton Canyon is a short track by any measure, but the layout isn't asking you to overpower it. A course rating of 66.8 and a slope of 113 suggest a design that's genuinely accessible — something closer to a democratic round than a punishing test. Shorter hitters, occasional players, and anyone who'd rather spend two hours on the course than four will find this a comfortable fit.
What the numbers can't fully communicate is the particular pleasure of playing golf in this corner of Southern California — December rounds under 70-degree skies, the chaparral-covered foothills changing color through the dry season, the eucalyptus and mature trees that define Southern California's municipal golf character.
Think of Eaton Canyon as Pasadena's neighborhood course in the best sense: unhurried, genuinely welcoming, and framed by one of the more spectacular mountain backdrops in public golf.
