Few courses in Ireland's northwest demand quite the same attention as Slieve Russell, the championship layout attached to the landmark Slieve Russell Hotel on the Cavan-Fermanagh border. Designed by Paddy Merrigan and opened in 1992, the course was built to genuine tournament standard from the outset, and it shows — broad, well-bunkered fairways roll across a drumlin landscape shaped by glacial activity, with water features threading through multiple holes to keep scoring in check at every turn.
The surrounding County Cavan countryside is classic Ulster borderland: green, intimate, and quietly dramatic, dotted with lakes and the kind of low, rumpled hills that make routing a golf course both a challenge and an opportunity. Merrigan made the most of it, producing a layout that rewards local knowledge without punishing the first-time visitor too harshly.
As a hotel resort course, Slieve Russell draws a wide mix of golfers — weekend breaks, society outings, and competitive scratch events all sit comfortably here. The combination of genuine length, scenic variety, and polished conditioning has kept it among the more respected destinations in Ulster golf.
