Few clubs in the English Midlands carry as much history as Sutton Coldfield Golf Club. Founded in 1889, it ranks among the oldest and most respected inland courses in the region, and its long membership in the fabric of West Midlands golf has earned it a quiet but well-established reputation among those who know the area well. The course occupies part of Sutton Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe — a remarkable stretch of ancient heathland, woodland, and open common that gives the layout a character you simply don't find on manufactured parkland courses.
That heathland setting is the defining feature here. Heather, silver birch, and gorse frame the fairways in the tradition of the great Surrey and Berkshire heathland courses, rewarding accuracy off the tee and punishing anything wayward. The terrain rolls naturally, and the turf tends to firm and fast in summer, producing the kind of running game that rewards thoughtful shot-making over raw power.
Sutton Coldfield itself is a prosperous town on Birmingham's northern edge, and the club reflects that civic standing — a genuine members' institution with standards and traditions maintained across well over a century of continuous play.
