Powerscourt Golf Club's West Course occupies one of the most dramatically situated pieces of golfing ground in Ireland, laid out across the Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow with the Great Sugarloaf Mountain as a near-constant backdrop. The estate itself is one of Ireland's great historic demesnes, and the golf — designed by David McLay Kidd, the Scot who would later build Bandon Dunes — carries that grandeur without apology. Opened in the mid-1990s, the West is the longer and, many argue, the more scenic of the two courses on the property, routing players through mature woodland, across open parkland, and past formal gardens with views that stop you mid-swing.
Enniskerry is a pretty estate village in the Wicklow foothills, just south of Dublin, and the surrounding countryside — the "Garden of Ireland" — delivers exactly what that name promises: lush, rolling terrain softened by frequent Atlantic moisture.
The West has hosted European Tour qualifying events and attracts serious visiting players alongside resort guests staying at the adjacent five-star Powerscourt Hotel. It rewards patience and straight driving, and the mountain scenery makes even a rough scorecard feel like a worthwhile afternoon.
