Few courses in southern England carry quite as much quiet prestige as Broadstone. Founded in 1898 and laid out across the heathland of east Dorset, the course belongs to that distinctly English tradition of heathland golf — close-cropped turf, heather lining the fairways, silver birch and Scots pine framing almost every hole. The architect Harry Colt revised the layout in the early 20th century, bringing the disciplined strategic thinking he applied at Sunningdale and Rye. The result is a course that rewards careful placement off the tee far more than raw power.
Broadstone sits on elevated ground above Poole Harbour, and on clear days the views across the water toward Purbeck and the Isle of Wight are genuinely striking. The terrain rolls gently but decisively, creating natural stances and lies that keep even experienced players honest throughout the round.
At par 70, the course plays shorter than many heathland tests, but length is never really the point here. The point is precision, variety, and the particular pleasure of playing golf on ground that has been doing this well for well over a century.
