El Camaleón Golf Course

Few courses in Mexico carry the competitive pedigree of El Camaleón. Designed by Greg Norman and opened in 2000 as part of the Mayakoba resort complex near Playa del Carmen, it became the first course in Mexico to host a PGA Tour event when the Mayakoba Golf Classic debuted here in 2007. That tournament — now known as the World Wide Technology Championship — has returned annually, cementing El Camaleón's status as the country's most prominent tournament venue and making it genuinely unique in Latin American golf.

Norman's design weaves through 3 distinct ecosystems: Caribbean coastline, dense Mayan jungle, and tidal mangrove wetlands. The routing shifts dramatically from hole to hole, so players never quite settle into a single visual rhythm. The famous par-4 14th runs along the beach with the Caribbean Sea directly in play, while interior holes feel almost enclosed by jungle canopy — wildlife crossings are routine, and the course earns its chameleon name honestly.
