Ólafsfjörður is one of Iceland's more remote fishing towns, wedged between steep volcanic mountains and a long narrow fjord in the Eyjafjörður region of the north. Getting there involves either a mountain pass or a tunnel bored through the rock — either way, arriving feels like an event in itself. That isolation is precisely what makes the idea of an 18-hole golf course here so characteristically Icelandic: the country has more golf courses per capita than almost anywhere on earth, and communities that elsewhere might not sustain a 9-hole layout somehow support full courses with genuine local pride.
With a par of 66, this is almost certainly a layout built around the terrain rather than against it — shorter holes that reward precision and course management over raw power, likely shaped by the dramatic topography that defines every square meter of available flat ground in a fjord valley.
Iceland's summer golf is its own phenomenon: rounds played at midnight under the midnight sun, cool air, unpredictable wind off the water, and scenery that makes it genuinely difficult to keep your eyes on the ball.
