Few resort courses in Southern California carry the pedigree of the layout at Ojai Valley Inn. The original course dates to 1923, designed by George Thomas — the same architect behind Riviera and LACC's North Course — and while the layout has evolved over the decades, it retains an intimacy and craftsmanship rooted in that golden era of American golf design. Billy Bell later contributed to the course, and a significant restoration in the early 2000s helped reclaim much of its classic character.
Ojai itself sits in a narrow east-west valley about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, ringed by the Topatopa Mountains. The town is famous for its "pink moment" at sunset, its arts colony atmosphere, and a dry, almost Mediterranean climate that keeps the course green and playable year-round. Tree-lined fairways and the surrounding mountain backdrop give rounds here a sense of seclusion that feels miles removed from the Los Angeles basin.
As a par 70, the course plays shorter than a traditional championship layout, but Thomas's routing rewards precision over power — the kind of course where placement off the tee matters and the scenery competes with the golf for your attention.
