Few golf settings in New Zealand — or anywhere, for that matter — match what Lake Hawea Golf Club puts in front of you. The course sits in the Upper Clutha basin near Wānaka, where the Southern Alps rise sharply on every horizon and the waters of Lake Hawea itself form a constant, luminous backdrop. This is high-country Otago at its most dramatic: tussock grass, braided riverbeds, and skies that shift between brilliant blue and fast-moving storm cloud with little warning.
The club is a genuine community layout, the kind that survives on volunteer labor and local loyalty rather than resort budgets. Expect a course that wears its rural character honestly — firm, natural turf shaped more by the surrounding landscape than by any grand architectural vision, with mountain winds that can render even modest distances genuinely demanding. The scenery has a way of distracting you from your scorecard, which is probably for the best.
Wānaka has become one of New Zealand's most sought-after destinations, drawing visitors for skiing, hiking, and lakeside living, yet the golf club retains the unhurried atmosphere of a small-town members' course. It's the sort of place where you finish your round and immediately want to know who you'd talk to about joining.
