Few courses in Europe carry a name quite as evocative as Villa d'Este, and the reality lives up to the reputation. Laid out in 1926 by Peter Gannon and later refined over the decades, the course occupies the wooded hillsides above Lake Como in the Brianza foothills, where the fairways move through stands of chestnut and oak and the light filters down in a way that makes the whole place feel deliberately cinematic. It has long been considered one of Italy's finest and most distinguished private clubs, and it regularly appears on continental rankings alongside the country's most celebrated layouts.
The course plays shorter than a modern championship test — par 69 reflects a routing shaped by terrain rather than length — but Montorfano's elevation changes and tree-lined corridors demand precision above power. Errant shots find trouble quickly here, and club selection from the sloping lies rewards local knowledge.
The broader Como region needs little introduction to travelers, but arriving here by car through the lake district villages adds a particular kind of anticipation that belongs entirely to this corner of northern Italy.
