Few public golf facilities in Northern Virginia carry as much unusual backstory as Laurel Hill. The course sits on land that was once part of Occoquan Regional Park and, more notably, adjacent to the former Lorton Correctional Complex — a sprawling District of Columbia prison facility that operated for nearly a century before closing in 2001. Fairfax County transformed portions of that reclaimed land into this public golf destination, making Laurel Hill one of the more distinctive origin stories in Mid-Atlantic municipal golf.
The layout was designed by John Sanford and opened in 2006, and it rewards players who think their way around rather than simply overpowering it. The terrain rolls through mature hardwoods and open meadows, with elevation changes that give the course genuine variety and some striking views across the Occoquan watershed corridor — scenery that feels removed from the suburban sprawl pressing in from every direction.
As a Fairfax County facility, Laurel Hill serves a wide range of players, from beginners to serious low-handicappers, and keeps public golf accessible in a region where private clubs dominate much of the calendar.
