Mt. Pleasant sits in the heart of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, a college town anchored by Central Michigan University and surrounded by the gently rolling farmland and second-growth forest typical of mid-Michigan. The region doesn't have the dramatic dune topography of the Lake Michigan shoreline courses, but it has produced a handful of layouts with genuine character — and Pohlcat is among the better-known names in this part of the state.
The course takes its name from Dan Pohl, the Mount Pleasant native and PGA Tour winner who reached the 1982 Masters playoff before falling to Craig Stadler. Pohl's local connection gave this layout a regional identity that pure resort courses rarely achieve — there's a sense that the community has a stake in the place.
The "Championship" designation signals that this is a layout built to stretch golfers rather than coddle them. Mid-Michigan's terrain lends itself to open, strategic designs where wind becomes a factor and course management matters as much as raw power. Visitors traveling through the center of the Lower Peninsula will find Pohlcat a worthy stop on any Michigan golf itinerary.
