Robert Trent Jones Jr. carved Cabo Real out of the raw Baja desert in 1994, routing the layout across arroyos, volcanic rock formations, and the kind of sun-scorched terrain that demands both precision and imagination. The course occupies a corridor between the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and the Sea of Cortez, and several holes play directly along the coastline, delivering views that stop you mid-swing. It is a genuine desert-and-ocean hybrid, and the contrast between the two landscapes — stark, parched hillsides on one side, brilliant blue water on the other — is the defining experience here.
San José del Cabo sits at the quieter, more residential end of the Los Cabos corridor, a world away from the resort-dense energy of Cabo San Lucas. Cabo Real was central to the development of what became one of Mexico's most celebrated golf destinations, drawing serious players south during the peak winter season when the weather is dry and dependably warm.
The layout plays to a par of 71, which signals a course that does not simply hand out birdie opportunities. Jones Jr.'s design rewards controlled ball-striking over power, particularly on approach shots where volcanic outcroppings and desert waste areas punish anything offline. The elevation changes are meaningful, the wind off the Cortez is a genuine factor most days, and the finishing stretch along the water is as dramatic as any in Mexican golf.
