Hayward sits deep in Wisconsin's Northwoods, a region defined by pine forests, glacial lakes, and a short but intense summer that draws visitors from the Twin Cities and Chicago looking to decompress somewhere genuinely wild. Big Fish Golf Club takes its name from the area's identity as a muskie fishing destination — the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame is literally here, anchored by a five-story fiberglass muskie you can stand inside. That sense of place bleeds into the course itself.
Big Fish opened in 2000 and was designed by Andy North and Roger Packard — North being the two-time U.S. Open champion turned course architect. The layout moves through classic Northwoods terrain: mature pines framing nearly every hole, wetlands coming into play throughout, and a rolling landscape that rewards course management over raw power. It has developed a strong regional reputation as one of the better destination tracks in northern Wisconsin.
For visiting golfers, this is a place where the surroundings do as much work as the design. The air smells like pine, the wildlife is present, and the pace feels unhurried — which is exactly why people drive four hours from the city to get here.
