Few public golf courses in America carry as much civic history as Jackson Park. Opened in 1930 and operated by the City of Seattle, it stands as one of the oldest and most democratic institutions in the local game — a place where generations of Seattleites have learned to play, ground out their handicaps, and shown up on weekday mornings with no tee time and a pull cart.
The course occupies a heavily wooded tract in Seattle's north end, and the tall Douglas firs and cedars that line virtually every fairway define the experience as much as any bunker or green. Wayward shots disappear quickly here, which keeps you honest. The layout plays to a par 70, meaning you'll encounter a shorter set of par 4s and fewer long holes than a traditional layout — but the tree pressure and the subtly uneven terrain ensure the card doesn't come easy.
Seattle's golf season stretches further than outsiders expect — mild temperatures keep the course playable most of the year, though the gray, damp winters are very much part of the deal. Jackson Park is not a destination course, but that was never the point. It belongs to the city.
